From what I understand, Hinduism is more a way of life rather than a religion. Its more about treating people right, just as any other set of beliefs is ofcourse, but closer to how Buddhism works. There is a lot of science involved as it was a very efficient way of spreading education centuries ago . However, there is not the one all encompassing god who has many faces but rather three - Brahma (the creator), Vishnu (the preserver) and Shiva (the destroyer). It does somehow vaguely relate to how matter cannot be created nor destroyed, so the 'gods' are the process of conversion of matter.

Over the course of history priests, kings, politicians and other interested parties have taken literal meanings to many things and exaggerated rituals for their own purposes. This has corrupted today's understanding of the religion by the masses. A lot like what has happened any other religion again...

I believe the purpose is now lost, which was to instill a set of morals and set accepted behaviour so that nobody harms anybody. This was needed at a time in the world, but now other means of instilling those same values are probably more effective. Performing rituals also gave people a sense if belonging and probably has some psychological value but the cost is getting too high now if you view it for humans overall.
