I read that the theory behind immunity for people coming forward is because if there was retroactive punishment like purgury as you suggested, less people will come forward to admit they lied. I believe this is common when someone lies about getting raped and then comes back and says it was a lie. If there was punishment for that person, they would be less inclined to come forward and admit the lie. It's not a perfect system but I can see the reasoning behind it.

Oh my God, every time the idea of Quebec separating comes up I get so excited that it actually might happen. For one, we get to keep so much of the money we send them so they can be socialist and second, it would be amazing to hear them beg to rejoin us after they realize all of benefits that they're used to were because they were part of Canada.
