Well you must understand that the groundwork to most autobahn-roads are very old (some date back to Hitler, who originally built them). Part of the autobahn being so famous however is because it is actually really safe despite the high speed you are able to drive on there. Part of it is the constant care of the roadwork (the other part being ambulances and police specifically designed for ermergencies on the autobahn), which is why they need to be worked on a lot.
