Men are taught the worst thing in the world is to look weak. For a lot of them smiling = submissive.

It might not be the majority, but I think it's pretty common depending on your culture. In the U.S. a lot of us were taught that men are supposed to be cool or tough. So they might smile for a picture with family or friends, but on a profile picture they might not be smiling so as to look manly, sexy, cool, etc.
