"I didn't learn that, we don't use that at work, only in school" instead of "I don't know"
What if I say something like "I learned that in school several years ago but I don't recall how to do that. I would have to look back in my notes, but if I were to try my best to recollect ... ". Basically I want to convey that I've learned it before so it's just a matter of me having to refresh my knowledge on it rather than learning it from nothing.

I think they mean, would it increase the odds of the northern event from happening sooner(as opposed to whether or not the north would feel a southern quake)?

Was the $10,000 worth it in the end considering you had to use up valuable vacation time?
Edit: I'm not talking about missing out on a paycheck (vacation is still paid time off). I'm talking about using up the opportunity to take paid time off. As in, if you wanted to go on an actual vacation later, you can't because you used it be stinky at home.
