Come and do it here in Japan. You won't fear for your life with the traffic and you'll see the most amazing sites in the world. Bike touring is huge here. Camp almost anywhere you like.

I spent a little time on some reservations in South Dakota doing some outreach work. The absolute squalor and hopelessness of the people I saw was remarkable. It seemed that generation after generation was permanently attached to the government tit with little incentive to move on. I know this sounds harsh, but until you've seen this in person you just can't imagine it. I just couldn't believe that this was in the United States.

It's only reasonable that not all reservations are like this, but the few I saw were deplorable and filled with malnourished, extremely poor people.
