my grandfather was a kiwi involved in the war, he apparently used Maori gibberish (place names and words they knew without knowing the actual language) a few times to avoid being caught by local patrols. The car full of troops would start talking all the Maori words they knew from New Zealand as if that was the only dialect they could speak, and it got them out of a few check points that would have been trouble otherwise. They were Eurpoean New Zealanders pretending they couldn't speak English.

yeah I get that, I meant more like: is it appreciated on a personal level. I just always feel bad for the staff who do the routine to a crowd of people blatantly ignoring them, talking etc. Think it's just a politeness thing, if someone is actually listening they might feel less like "well, screw you guys, have a nice flight jerks"
