What is our alternative? Currently we bend over the barrel and pay or we go without health insurance. Those are literally the only two options in this country right now. With the obamacare legislation, it will soon be illegal to not have health insurance. Believe me brother. The majority of us are painfully aware that we are getting fucked by this system on a daily basis.

Wife and I just gave birth in a birthing center with a midwife. Advantages are more relaxed environment. No hospital codes being yelled out over the loudspeaker or bustling. We got a private room to ourselves and except for the actual birth, we were left mostly alone.

We got to immediately hold our baby and she never left my wifes arms from the moment she came out.

The best part is probably that we got to go home same day. Baby was born at 8 on a Friday and we were home by midnight. The midwife came by twice during the weekend to check on baby and momma.

If something serious happens, the midwives are equipped to deal with it. IF there was any risk of my wife bleeding out, they would have sent her to a hospital.

Yes. I do. She would have roughly 5 minutes if something happened during the actual birth. And they are equipped with all the drugs, clamps and other surgical instruments that a hospital would use. We had to take a class on medical complications and bleeding was covered pretty extensively. The course of action is pretty standard and the midwives are well practiced in it.
