I hope you have that fireplace and chimney inspected before using it. It looks like there might be some high temp mortar missing between the fire bricks, but it's hard to say for sure from that picture.

Twisted lines? For it to open completely facing the opposite way it would have had to be hooked up to the risers backwards. The main is rarely ever disconnected from the risers once installed. I did see a dude purposely do this one time. He deployed and landed it backwards.
