I'm so sorry to hear about your son. :(

I'm a nursing student and a PCA at a big Children's hospital. I tell myself the day I don't shed a few tears over the death of a child is the day I need to consider taking a break from peds.

If we’re talking young, healthy people who survived Covid.

28 year old male, no PMH. Not overweight. On ECMO for around 6 weeks, intubated for 7 weeks. He got a trach. He survived but will have to live with the after-effects including muscle wastage and lung damage, plus major trauma, for the rest of his life.

Yes, it’s the only place they do it (bypass is done in the OR). At our peak, we had 27 people on ECMO, which is an INSANE number. Most places (including us pre-covid) will only run 3-5 at one time and that’s generous.

God, i really love anesthesia. I think people think I'm really weird but I sincerely love being put under...one second you're awake, the next second you feel funny, then you're waking up!

Ahhh, it's one of my favorite things.
