In my experience, Chinese opinions about this subject get vague when it comes to the direct role Mao did or did not play in these two eras. What is your position on this, and how much do you think the truth is purposely obscured at oppressed by the educational system?

On a related note, I can tell you that our educational system was vague at best when covering the "Reconstruction" period after our Civil War, 1865-1876. And not much better covering the war itself. When my father was in school, it was worse. He was taught outright White Supremacist propaganda, in New York City public Schools. So it isn't a purely totalitarian, or authoritarian problem.
