I'm not an expert or anything but I've seen them do this in other cases, I think it's because the behavior of the defendant after the fact can strengthen the eventual murder case. I.e. the person arranging the hit can't later claim they were going to call it off, it can be shown that they're showing no remorse by continuing to feign ignorance and grief and not coming clean immediately. This is just my speculation though.
