Neurologically speaking, the brains of nearly all people who consider themselves transgender bear more resemblance to the average brain of their self-identified gender rather than that of their biological sex. So transitioning to their brain's gender is correcting a mismatch of the body. In other words, CURING a problem, not creating one.
(EDIT: grammar :P)

Sexual orientation plays a role too. Male-to-female transgender lesbians have a less prototypically "female" looking brain than male-to-female transgender straight women do, the same way cis lesbians have a less prototypically "female" looking brain than cis straight women do.

It actually is a physical "deformity" in the brain. The problem with using the term "disorder" is that a "disorder" needs to be something which is problematic to a person's health. Dwarfism and Down's Syndrome have associated health problems. Being transgender in and of itself does not cause health problems, but it does cause a lot of psychological issues due to society's extremely negative treatment of transgender individuals.

I have a few questions. 1. Does she still harbor resentment toward the Japanese people? 2. Why did her family feel they, in particular, were in danger while they were in southern China? Did many families from their village stay put? 3. Did your grandma have any up-close-and-personal encounters with Japanese "colonists" or soldiers? What were those experiences like?
Thank you so much for doing this AMA.

David, Defiance has just aired and I'm wondering how your experience has been working with the creative team at Syfy. How would you say your experience on Defiance compared to Game of Thrones?
