Just an addition to what /u/towerchaser said, another benefit is the accountability. As a woman who's had a few bad experiences riding in DC cabs alone, Uber makes me feel safer. As OP said, there's a mechanism to complain about the kind of harassment I've experienced in DC cabs, but more importantly, if anything happens to me, Uber knows who I was with and where. And because the drivers have a real application and background check process, it's less likely that that oversight will be necessary in the first place.
