I was the editor for Coraline. I can say that there are many attempts to create animated films that are unique and push the form into new territories. Coraline did okay, but certainly didn't set the box office on fire. We knew while making and marketing it that it was a tough sell. While it has really gained a lot of good reputation in the long term, upon release it didn't really do the B.O. in any way to make financiers sit up and take notice.

The onus is really on audiences to go out to the theater and support new and interesting takes on animation. If the people with the money don't see the real profit potential, they are hesitant to fund films. Animation takes a long time- 3+ years for a feature. That's a long time to sink 60+ Million dollars into an investment without certainty that your return will be good.

Your apology to Kevin Kline in A Fish Called Wanda is one of my favorite edit/reveals in all film. Still funny every time I watch it, even though I know the gag. Was it something you were able to get quickly, or did you have to do a bunch of takes hanging upside down? Seems like that would've been a headache. Worth it.

Did you hate Joilet West as much as I did? I sat behind you during an assembly my freshman year. You were "that kid who was in Adventures in Babysitting."
