As a young writer, what kinds of stories were you writing?

I recall your Wimbly Womblys video in which you mentioned that you stopped writing altogether for about a year following the rejection from your school's writing program, but how did you get back into it and what types of things did you work on?

Edit: I suppose a part of what I'm asking is about your transition from rejection to the publication of Looking for Alaska. Were you writing a lot of short stories or novellas or even full length novels during this period? Or perhaps a bit of each?
