I know people who have risen in a Japanese company. It really depends how the game is played. its like a game of Go or something. Study all the pieces/players, learn their move capabilities. Develop a strategy. The game isn't that complicated but it usually takes a lot of time to play the game, especially if someone high up plays their cards right, there are ways to control turn taking. A lot of it is about luck too of course. When does one enter the game on the time line of the company. History of the game is of course a necessary aspect to understand also.
It used to be very complex because of how the government / religion / society system worked, clans and what not.

As a web designer who doesn't speak business Japanese, What are my odds of getting employed in Japan? How long until knowing the language wont be necessary to get hired? 25 years? 50?
