I can see a lot more competition on /r/pics or /r/funny, those subs get a lot more content that takes a lot less time to digest.

I just can't understand why someone would do this on /r/pics. What do they gain out of it?

You're right it will bring a lot more attention to the issue, but it's going to get a lot worse before it gets better.
