I have built very scalable and large php applications processing 10's of thousands of transactions per second. Some of these application have turned millions of dollars in revenue per month. PHP is just another language if you hear someone say it is for noobs you just encountered a fanboi that only knows a single language. (facebook was built with it)

College indirectly taught me how to learn other coding languages on my own

This is it, college is not really required having initiative and the ability to train yourself is the real key to success.
