Also land. Some they've owned for hundreds of years. A church used to be the center of culture, so they were in the center of towns. When those towns became cities and the churches stayed in the same location, suddenly that land/property was worth a lot more.

Think about all the Catholic Churches in NYC that have probably been there for 150+ years. Many wealth estimates including real estate/property holdings so that can really bolster the perception of wealth when it comes to churches.
