I was with CLR 15 in Afghanistan last year with the USMC. You send my unit a really nice basketball hoop for Christmas as a gift. We spent so many hours using that thing in our free time. Thank you so much for bringing a slice of home to us for the holidays.

As an AD marine who has supported the repeal since before they talked about repealing it I'm glad to see this post! I actually joined the marines with a lesbian (now openly) but haven't had anyone come out in my unit yet. Still whenever someone makes an slur in front of the marines I'm quick to shut that shit down in case any of them would like to come out its a safe environment. Good for you man and congratulations! Now let's work on the repeal of DOM act and get benefits for spouses!

So with that said. -how did your unit react?

-did you work with any known bigots beforehand that act differently now?

-has it effected your ability to get promotions/billets.

-does your chain of command recognize the legitimacy of your marriage and do you bring your husband around family events?

-how did coming out go down?

Thanks for the AMA!

Haha!! When someone "pins" someone they are removing the rank insignia of the previous rank and "pinning" the new rank on them. It's very symbolic. Single marines usually have a leader they felt guided them to that new rank but married makes generally have a spouse do it.

It's also customary to be "pinned" with rank chevrons of someone you respect. I. E. I am a SGT he looks up to and he is being promoted to SGT. I will give him the chevrons from my collar to wish him good luck. Conversely it's bad luck to be promoted into chevrons of someone who has been in trouble, demoted, or generally a shit bag.
