At the beginning, we made the mistake of not officially splitting our roles. The issue was that we have very similar skill sets, like we are both programmers. Also, being competitive and brothers didn't help.

But after 4 years we have a system that works pretty well for us. The role changes on a game by game basis. So for example, if someone comes up with a game idea, that person becomes the defacto game designer. Or if someone started working on a working prototype, he becomes the main coder.

So for our latest game RPG Clicker, I came up with the game idea and started the prototype of the game, so I was the main designer and coder while Nick was the main artist and user experience person. That doesn't mean Nick didn't do any coding or help with the game design, but that when we have any conflicts in any part of the project, the person who leads it gets the final say.

Its simple!

Step 1. Lounge around in pajamas all day in house.

Step 2. Eat instant ramen for breakfast, lunch, and dinner.

Step 3. ????

Step 4. PROFIT

Surprisingly, for asian parents they were concerned but very supportive. I guess we already met their criteria of being engineers with a formal CS degree.

The question has been answered here.

Nick answered how much we have earned here.

In terms of $/download, it's hard to say. It varies from game to game, and even if we get the downloads, a lot of people uninstalls the game within a day, so the download count doesn't really represents the number of people who actually plays our game.

If I had to guestimate a $/download for our games it would probably be something around $0.06 - $0.10 per download.

EDIT: Forgot to answer the other part of your question. We mainly make money from our banner ads in game. So we get paid by the performance of the ads, like how many people see the ads or click on it.
