I commend you on your efforts... LOL. And Hi! I did one of these a few years ago with one of my accounts, and I believe my friend Loren did one as well, though his wasn't as a "professional".

Have fun! I'm gonna link this a bit and see what happens.

Hmmm. It seems that perhaps reading, or maybe it's comprehension, is not your forte. That's ok.

You see, this is an IAmA, where people get to learn some stuff about some stuff they didn't know about stuff. That's pretty cool.

So, you brought up a topic that lots of folks should know about - the difference between sclerotia and true truffles. Lots of people need to know that stuff. Psychedelic mushroom people all refer to these "philosopher's stones" as truffles, so it's a confusing little thing, and it's good to include that stuff here in this thread. That has value to OTHER PEOPLE, ya know? So there is, in fact, a reason to keep it around.

It's the internet. It's a huge document. It persists. Years from now you can come back and read this thread, and magically the information is still here, and just as valuable.

So yeah, uh, deleting stuff at reddit is getting to be a huge pain in the arse. It's unnecessary. This isn't a private conversation. I never said anything about "hiding" anything. But you deleted your comments, leaving mine to hang in the ether, out of context. So in a sense, what you did was a direct affront to me, personally. I shared information with you, and you, having learned the information, selfishly and needlessly deleted your comment, which rendered the thread nonsensical until I restored the continuity by quoting your deleted comments...

Seriously. Don't just delete shit willy-nilly. You waste people's time. It's maddening.

Cheers!

Because you can't spell, and because they aren't truffles. Truffles are reproductive, spore-bearing structures. What you are referring to are sclerotia.

They are sold as "truffles" because they resemble truffles, but they are not actually truffles.

I am so so calm, but it's rather silly of you to delete the comment above, so now nobody knows what's going on. Don't do that. You ruin the record.

Why would you do such a thing?

I like tampanesis truffles.

It's a mushroom. It's scientific name is Psilocybe tampanensis. Th suffix -ensis denotes that the name is a reference to the originating locality.

Why do you think that?

This comment is akin to all those folks who say they "don't like mushrooms"... I'm like... "Which mushroms?" ...

"All of them."

I just can't comprehend it. There are hundreds of truffles, all unique species, with different aromas and uses. There are thousands of mushrooms, all with distinct smells, flavors and textures.

It's like someone saying "I don't like fruit."

Really? Watermelon, tomatoes, avocados, bananas and capers all have something in common that you don't like?

That's how different mushrooms can be from one another. In different families, even in different orders... all still mushrooms.

Lots of people enjoy truffles greatly, because lots of truffles are amazing. Some do suck. But mostly it's preference. Rich people do lots of stupid shit, but rich people aren't the only ones consuming truffles. I sell lots of truffles to people around town who just like food.

An ounce of Oregon Black Truffles for $25 can infuse a half dozen eggs, a pound of butter, a package of brie, and a small bowl of oil, all of which can be used later on, while you still get to eat the actual ounce of truffles.

So, for $25, you end up with truffled eggs, authentic truffle oil, truffle butter (which can keep in the freezer for years) and some truffled cheese, AND a big fat one-ounce truffle.

Truffles aren't just for rich people. Education about truffles, their use, and their availability can change some of these misconceptions.

For what they are and how you should use them, truffles are not as ridiculously expensive as would seem, because the aroma goes a long way.
