My Oma recently passed away at the age of 92. She immigrated to Canada with my grandfather from Berlin in the early 50s after he was held as a POW here and fell in love with the country.

She also spoke of how much everyone loved Hitler at the time, given how much he had improved the economy. No one had a clue then about the concentration camps.

My Oma was also pleasantly surprised at how friendly people were when they arrived in Canada. They had anticipated difficulty given their German nationalities, but they felt welcome.

My grandparents wanted their kids to be as Canadian as possible and they spoke mainly English at home. It's a shame that my mom and uncles are not able to speak or understand it well.

When you arrived in 1953, did you also try to assimilate as quickly as possible, or speak only English at home?

I just explain them as breakfast nachos to convince other people to try it. The eggs on top with that salsa verde... so god damn good.

We'll have to book a trip to your place to try out that sandwich!

In your opinion, what is the best Mexican breakfast and why is it chilaquiles with salsa verde?
