Former palliative care co-ordinator here; it is standard practice in the UK to give the strongest analgesia available (ie diamorphine) during palliative care. I pity those in countries who are denied this very effective painkiller during terminal illnesses. We are unable to completely relieve our patients of all suffering, but we can make damn sure we do everything medically possible short of euthanasia to make folk as comfortable as possible.
