I lived in a place called Volcanoville for a wile as a child, the nearest source of water was a Well along the highway about 15-20 miles away.

We were home schooled while we lived there. There was no electricity available to the community, TV time was when we hooked up a 5 inch black and white TV to a car battery to watched a special event. I remember people coming from all over the area to huddle around this little 5" screen. Other than that, people made their own entertainment, music, partied, played, and worked.

The community would truck the water in, and place it where it could be used by the community, and carried where it was needed. There were few vehicles, so sometimes people would have to share or haul it by hand. Although the community was extremely poor, they were one of the happiest bunches of people I have ever been around. I look back very fondly on that period of my childhood, it was one of the happiest of my life. We spent very little time indoors, always exploring and playing.

This was in California in the 80's by the way. Most people don't realize that there are still places like this in the US, even today. Asking everyone to uproot and move closer to the well, would have been asking everyone to leave their community, their homes, family, and friends. The hassle of having to distribute water when needed was much easier than the alternative.

Edit: spelling and clarity

Why has the variety and depth of articles on the site changed in recent months? I have been a user for years, but I now find the content much less varied and engaging.

Plus it is very buggy right now, how are you addressing these issues?
