I am telling you this in the spirit of sharing what I know, not to specifically bash what you've said here. :) I can't tell you how similar the culture is or isn't as I am not familiar with the Navajo at all, but I can tell you that "Sioux" is not really a tribe, but instead refer to the Seven Council Fires (made up of the Lakota, Teton, Santee, Nakota/Yankton, and Dakota) that have their own similar but different cultures and languages. Sioux was an offensive term that other tribes used, relating to "snake". If you want more info, look for Seven Council Fires, not Sioux :) Many tribes are forced to use Sioux in English for some things, as in the area the term is still widely used by people off the reservation.

Kevin Costner is well known to be interested in the Lakota culture in a non-exploitative way, and did the best he could on Dances with Wolves as far as I know, but it was still a film and he did make money off of it. Just my opinion, but it couldn't have been a "pure" representation. The book Waterlily by Ella Cara Deloria is a book I recommend :)

Hoka hey! I live in Albuquerque, and haven't heard anything about your walk. Are you coming through the area and doing any events/talks/meetups? I am a recent transplant to NM from SD and would love to learn more about the Navajo experience here in the southwest.
