I identified the foods I never ever allowed myself to eat but really enjoyed (white rice was one, I remember, and cheese) and made sure I ate it like 3 times a week. I made sure that as I was eating it, I was really relishing it and enjoying it, eating really slowly and appreciating it. After the meal I'd feel less violently compelled to go buy $20 of bin candy and eat it alone, locked up in my room.

This is a really good idea. It's a technique called mindful eating (look it up). I use it for the opposite reason. Sometimes it is difficult for me to have an appetite even when I am hungry.
