In the auto business, it is referred to as "curbing" cars. Origin goes back to salesmen meeting their customer at the "curb:, outside the store, and telling the customer the store only wants to pay X for his trade. The salesman, however, will pay X plus (several hundred dollars), so it is in the best interest of the customer to sell the car to the salesman. The salesman then flips the car to a wholesaler, and pockets the profit. Same principle...
