The name came from Japanese vending machines that dispense a random assortment of little plastic capsules containing toys (oftentimes something in multiple pieces that can be assembled, but sometimes it's one piece, or stickers, or a keychain, etc). They're called gachapon, the gacha coming from the sound that the mechanical bits of the machine makes. So when Japanese mobile games started dropping loot, they were called gacha games.
