I've found it's a good idea (with any contractor) to start the conversation by asking their hourly rate, then progressing to "I'd like X installed". It gives you an instant foot in the door to ask if it's going to take them ~50 hours to install the system.

Also, with all major appliances, there are only a small handful of manufacturers for all the brands. Often the same model rolling off the same assembly line for 2 different brands will have 2 different prices. For example with HVAC, Goodman and Amana units roll off the same assembly line with the same paint job and everything, but Amanas cost more. (Not promoting or demoting Goodman/Amana, simply an example.) You may have found a similar system for $2500 that could be purchased for more or less depending on the brand with no difference in quality.

I would guess Vagfilla meant high velocity systems, which are advertised as being great in retrofit installations where there are no existing ducts. High velocity systems are designed to be quiet to compensate for the increased air speed, but I have not seen an installation myself so I can't comment for sure.

Mini-splits are awesome too!
