Adding to this- people at the door also check for multiple items scanned in a row, because sometimes the register will read the barcode more than once as it's being moved through. There are also a few items to check for that the member may not have received, such as stamps and movie tickets which are easy to forget- people will sometimes leave without having received them.

TLDR; door people save Costco money on unscanned items and members money on multi-scans/forgotten items.
