I'm sure if Dr. Truglio can manage to avoid them, a child isn't likely to stumble onto them either, much less understand what the text is on about. If they do, they're already corrupted. Look into the history of "Bert is Evil" and you'll discover that the concept is a natural by product of misinterpretation by a world gone mad. I like how you say they're funny, then delve into your problem with them. It's called "guilty pleasure." You had your fun, now torch the place.

Hello, Dr. Truglio. I suppose I am late to this party-- Grover is my favourite, too. I grew up on old school Sesame Street, and love that aspect of it even today. I see that it is re-branded for pre-school kids, and wonder what was wrong with the traditional approach.

Mark Saltzman may have talked out of turn when he spoke about Bert and Ernie being a gay couple. Frank Oz initially insisted that they were not, stating that as one of the creators, he ought to know. Sesame Street's official line is that they are puppets and not sexual one way or the next. Fair enough.

My question is: what is to stop any writer from hijacking a narrative? They represent the show in their own rights, but will make unconfirmed claims about characters that they didn't create, and as a result, fudge the canon, confusing audiences and raising questions that really ought to be left to interpretation. Frank Oz says that the performers never would do anything to alter the image of the characters, even when the cameras weren't rolling because they never wished to betray the purity of the characters. So how was Saltzman able to so blithely bypass this philosophy with impunity? Mr. Oz is my last living hero, and I know that his comments were not designed to be anti-gay. He has even softened his stance because two people loving one another is wonderful after all.

Is there any reason why Saltzman would have thought twice before making such a bold move? I'm sure lots of people weren't happy, myself included mainly for the disrespect given to the creators.
