I'm having trouble finding it but I found a video on reddit a few weeks ago where a guy learns to speedcube and interviews with a speedcuber in the ~5 second solve range. The professional basically says when you start you learn one or two ways (algorithms) to solve the cube. As you become better you learn more techniques and get better at applying them. You also learn how to manipulate the cube more efficiently, making more moves with less hand motion.

tl;dr Practice, practice, practice.
