Taking a stab in the dark here, but it's possible beta alanine binds to some receptor protein normally used for signaling ... not sure what exactly, probably not mast cells since you mentioned anti-histamines were not effective... present on the epidermis / dermis and causes it to contort enough that water no longer binds.

How do you define successful? I'm not familiar with your district, but if the majority voted for Sanders, Abdul, Shri, etc, why are they not your elected officials today? Or perhaps the reality is your camp isn't the majority? Something doesn't add up here.
