Thank you so much! I have always wanted to talk to someone who grew up during that era.

After we graduate (we're both film majors), my girlfriend and I want to make documentaries about human trafficking. Do you have any advice on filmmaking that you would like to share? It's an honor to have you here on reddit!

I don't know, they seem pretty prominent in most pictures of the protest: http://imgur.com/a/1ghhi/

Hi Kathy! I met you and your family at last year's fourth estate. On my way back, I started reading Dan's journal and oh my gosh. I could not put it down. His sense of adventure and love for other cultures reawakened my own, and secured him a spot on the list of my heroes. In fact, it encouraged me to see about doing some video journalism with my film degree (in addition to social justice docs). My question for you is, as a mother, did you ever feel worried about his safety when he was on assignment or traveling? That's one of my chief concerns going into this field of work is not wanting to worry my parents to death. What are some ways to help them process the worry or help them not worry as much? Thank you so much!

Thank you so much for doing this ama. I have two questions: While you were still in the USSR, how much propaganda was actually present, and how did people react to it?
What was the thing that kept you going when you were in Kazakhstan? It seems so easy to have just given up hope.
