One huge hurdle is the fact that people are so different, and so are their reasons for needing a prosthetic. The leads to a large range of requirements.
For example, how can the prosthetic be mechanically attached so that it is a good/tight fit, while still being comfortable. Where should the electrodes (that read the nervous signals) be attached? How often should they be replaced?

Thanks for the response! The gut and its flora seems like such an alien world to me, with so much potential! I'm glad there are people like you studying it. I'm also glad that fecal transplants may one day become (hopefully delicious) pills :)
