What turned Germany away from drugs, and meth in particular? Was there somewhat of a nationwide withdrawal when meth became illegal? Are there any lasting effects from this period on drug culture and markets in Germany today?

I haven't watched seduced, but I think the vow very much did that on purpose to try to recreate the building feeling of bad things going on. I decided not to read anything about it while watching and it really builds up in a kind of horrifying way from "probably a scam and a bit creepy" to "holy fuck". I do think part of that is to make the main characters more sympathetic, but overall it just felt more like trying to tell a story rather than lay out facts more like a typical documentary.

my first priority would be to remove a lot of what prevents private funding of science from working better
Could you explain that a bit more? I understand that there are lots of restrictions on the research itself (in medical research especially) but I wasn't aware of restrictions on who could fund research. To my knowledge, there is nothing stopping any company or private individual from funding an academic institution to do research.
What you seem to be primarily advocating (correct me if I'm wrong) by mentioning patent laws, etc, is making it easier for companies to do R&D, but this is a fundamentally different thing from the kinds of science NASA and the NSF tends to support. Also, while kickstarter and related funding projects are very exciting, there is a huge difference between funding small innovative companies, and supporting pure research.

I'm thinking it's more of a hatemail and death threats thing, than a hassle
