I worked in pro sports for nearly a decade on the sales side of things (tix, sponsorships, suites) including 3 years with the Wizards. Basketball Operations is a tough nut to crack. Most are folks that played in the Association or grew up with people that did. I know a few have worked their way up the ladder - literally starting as trainers or towel/water guys. Getting experience in smaller leagues can help as well. Teamwork Online is basically the indeed.com for sports jobs. You’ll have to apply to a BUNCH to even land an interview - took me 40-50 applications before I got my first call back. But it’s worth it!!

That’s true. Once you get in to the industry your chances of making a jump SIGNIFICANTLY improve. Minor league team positions often wear a TON of hats. Start in sales for minor leagues, and you’ll likely do game day operations, equipment, etc. You will have daily interaction with all levels of the organization and can build the relationships necessary to jump where you want to be.
