To piggy back, I’m a photographer in a 30s market, and just turned 23. This is my 3rd job in TV news (all voluntary moves). They seem to really take a liking to younger hires because:
they can get away with paying us less
we’re more willing to move
we’re more in tune with newer technologies/social media
they’re slowly discovering they need fresh perspectives
some higher-ups are more keen on giving young’ns a chance; in other words, some understand the paradox of “you need experience to get this entry level job”
I’ve worked in markets where +/- one-third of a station was laid off, mostly because their wages were too high, they worked there too long, stuff like that. Big reason why unions in journalism are coming back in style.
Also, /u/tault002, PM me! I used to work with another former KOIN person!
