I have a similar story involving me and my dad.

My dad and i were flying back home from San Francisco, his carry-on was a nike drawstring bag with his headphones, phone, wallet, snacks and 2 pocket knifes. My dad was unaware he had these pocket knives until he checked his bag one last time at the gate. My dad then went back to security to let them know and send knives back home.

It wasnt really “do the right thing” it was the fact that he wanted to be as cooperative as possible and not get in trouble. He also regretted it because they spent over an hour making sure he wasnt a criminal, even though he approached them on his own recognizance. His knives were also stolen in the mail as well.
