What unit were you in? My dad was in WW2 in the 6th Maine's and fought at Guadalcanal and Okinawa. He and 18 others were selected for some reason I don't know to be present on that USS Missouri for the surrender. I have the formal picture of them by the Navy. He too had been sent ashore and ordered to one of the atomic cities. My Dad died 18 years ago from a rare leukemia. I have found out since on the web that quite a few soldiers developed leukemia years later after having been to Hiroshima or Nagasaki right at wars end. You were lucky.
