Do you have to carry extra food for the first aid kid, or are they self sustaining?

I've seen a few documentaries over the years (some more than 10 years ago) that talk about the science of artificial and lab grown organs. As someone in your position I assume you have done some research on the subject. Where do you think the technology stands at this point? I saw something on using stem cells to grow an organ in a cell matrix that was cleared out of its original stuff.

Also, do you you hate Star Trek IV? (McCoy gives an old lady a pill to regrow a kidney)
