We'll, unfortunately just about every commercial plane relies exclusively on software to run the engines. The problem here wasn't the fact that they used software, the problem is that it was potential poorly designed and definitely under trained.

Nice! I can't encourage you enough to go get 10 hours of flight instruction, it's not unaffordable, teaches extremely valuable life skills, and will help you frame your work at the paper. Happy to recommend some places in your area if you'd like.

Many many planes from Boeing and Airbus are self certified, it's normally not an issue. The FAA would need a huge huge budget increase to change the status quo. Believe it or not, Boeing has a huge interest in certification being thorough (see today's stock process), we need to maybe tweak the process but it doesn't need to be reinvented.

The Air France crash is strikingly similar: a design decision, complex automation augmentation, and inadequate training led to that fatal mishap.
