Pinellas County Sheriff Bob Gualtieri, even said they think police are particularly unqualified to be the ones dealing with this issue
Police officer here. That could not be more true. I've had no formal training in dealing with children, and basically no training on mentally ill people. But I spend a large portion of my shift dealing with issues stemming from mental illness (doubly so if you count drug addiction). But we're always the ones that end up getting called because everyone knows that if you call 911 for help, you'll get an officer to show up. Good luck calling your doctor at 2am or having a psychologist come to your house to talk your family member back into reality.
School officers are being relied on too heavily. Their job should be the security of the building and preventing criminal activity on the campus. They shouldn't be handling troublesome students, and they definitely shouldn't be getting called to deal with students with mental illness. That's what mental health professionals are for. If you need something arrested, investigated, or shot, call the police. If you have a medical problem like mental illness, call a medical health professional. We don't except doctors and therapists to handle bar fights, rape investigations, or active shooters so I'm not sure why cops are being tasked with handling medical problems.
