Opponents don't want the pipeline built, at all. One of their stated goals (as mentioned multiple times, elsewhere in this topic) is to discourage oil production as much as possible to try to get us to move to solar and wind energy. The merits of that issue aside, this is why you don't hear them say "let's build it somewhere elsewhere", or "let's figure out how to build this pipeline that makes everyone happy."

Also, transport via trucks and trains are far more accident-prone than transport via pipelines. There's a much lower risk of spills with pipelines.
