I want to hop on to this question, if /u/FormerLoanCollector is still around. I have a few different types serviced by Sallie Mae right now, all federal but some subsidized (undergrad) and some unsubsidized (grad) ... I'm currently in deferment because I'm in grad school, but I want to know what is best when I start repaying - should I ask someone at SM to help me consolidate these? Or at least consolidate the ones that are the same type?

Thanks so much for this answer! It helped a lot. Yes, I'll probably wait until I'm finished with school (which is later this year), but the subsidized/unsubsidized part completely makes sense. I don't plan on doing more school (hopefully) so I don't plan to defer again, therefore the subsidy won't be useful anymore.

One question: where did you get the rate of 5.5% for the full balance? Was that a weighted average of the existing interest rates, or something to do with current interest rates?
