Bless up, former R131. Business team taught me a lot.

With DACA in place there was no incentive to do anything about the immigration issue. DACA has been in place for 5 years and exists because congress didn’t do anything to fix the issue. Democrats want to curry the Latino vote by running on immigration and amnesty, Republicans want the support of their base by running on immigration enforcement and border security. Politically, nobody “wants” this fixed. Ending DACA threw a wrench into the political points game by forcing congress to choose: put something on the books with more teeth than DACA and do your job or be known as the congress who let 1,000,000 people get deported through incompetence and inaction. It’s time to stop putting a bandaid on the issue and leaving these kids/adults in political limbo with no path to citizenship. It’s unfair and cruel.

DACA was going to be challenged in the courts and was likely to fail. DACA needed to end regardless of how we feel, it was a stop gap measure that left people in legal limbo every two years with no path to citizenship and no guarantees it would be upheld between administrations. Congress needs to enact DACA or something like the DREAM act into law and Trump basically forced the ball into congress’ court by saying DACA is over, fix this or a million people get deported. His misstep, as we have come to expect from him, was showing his hand in a tweet saying “I will revisit the issue!” So now democrats want to run on this new immigration fight in the primaries and have no incentive to work with republicans, and republicans don’t want to piss off their base and push an amnesty legislation and now know Trump won’t let DACA die, so they have no incentive to do anything. So best case scenario the Left and Right work together to pass legislation (fat chance) and worst case people get deported. Most likely case is nothing changes and we lost another chance to help the immigrant population.
