Because it's very far away from the world the majority of reddit users live in, and people dislike what they don't know. You see the same resentment against fashion, going out in clubs, or anything fancy that isn't an expensive video game basement in most default subs.

Not OP, but I think it's really not helping with the bad image of Africa on reddit to generalize 54 countries (even when you say "some of these places").

You wouldn't ask him the same thing about Europe just because there is a conflict in Ukraine would you?
