In this case, that everything exists because something existed previously.

In a simple sense, a glass of water is on a wooden desk. The desk only exists because someone cut down a tree and used the wood to build the desk. The existence of the desk if contingent upon the existence of the tree.

The tree does not exist without a seed. A seed must be planted in dirt, given water, oxygen, sunlight, etc. The dirt, water, oxygen, sunlight, all came from other "things" and scenarios playing out that enabled their existence. So, try to trace all that back. Everything in our existence is contingent upon something else existing before us.

However, there has to be some beginning point. Something that was always there, that began the creation itself.
